“And Jesus answered them, Truly I say to you, if you have faith (a firm relying trust) and do not doubt, you will not only do what has been done to the fig tree, but even if you say to this mountain, Be taken up and cast into the sea, it will be done. And whatever you ask for in prayer, having faith and really believing, you will receive.” (Matthew 21:21-22)
There are some interesting points in this scripture. Jesus is telling the disciples how to have complete faith after He cursed the fig tree and it dried up.
Point 1 – Faith is defined as a “firm, relying trust.” Firm says it’s not going anywhere. It’s standing strong and firm. Relying means to depend on it actually happening. I’m relying on my employer to deposit money in my bank account on payday. Trust indicates a relationship that is filled with the confidence that the other person’s word is true and can be counted upon.
Point 2 – Do not doubt. Doubt hesitates. Doubt questions. Doubt falters. It’s so easy to say “do not doubt” but oh so hard to do in the face of impossible circumstances. To “not doubt” means FAITH AND BELIEVING has to REPLACE doubt. When doubt can be replaced with faith, then the mountains can move and the dead can be raised. Diseases can be commanded to heal.
Point 3 – Everything is possible. Jesus said “you will not only do what has been done to the fig tree, but even if you say to this mountain, Be taken up and cast into the sea, it will be done.” He is pulling out all the stops. He is removing all barriers to the impossible becoming possible!
Point 4 – Jesus sets the promise by reiterating it. He said “And whatever you ask for in prayer, having faith and really believing, you will receive.” He gives the whole principle to us in a nutshell the word “whatever” being the key word. Whatever means to fill in the blank with WHATEVER your impossibility is!
Jesus said “really believing” and that is not something that can be mustered up or conjured up either. The only way this kind of faith can happen is through a strong and close relationship with Him. Confidence comes through knowledge of His character and that comes through time spent in His presence. All things are possible with God, the IF depends on you and me….
Blessings everyone…
