The Great Multiplier

“Elisha said to her, What shall I do for you? Tell me, what have you of value in the house? She said, Your handmaid has nothing in the house except a jar of oil.

Then he said, Go around and borrow vessels from all your neighbors, empty vessels–and not a few. And when you come in, shut the door upon you and your sons. Then pour out the oil you have into all those vessels, setting aside each one when it is full.

So she went from him and shut the door upon herself and her sons, who brought to her the vessels as she poured the oil. When the vessels were all full, she said to her son, Bring me another vessel. And he said to her, There is not a one left. Then the oil stopped multiplying.

Then she came and told the man of God. He said, Go, sell the oil and pay your debt, and you and your sons live off the rest.” (II Kings 4:2-7)

This widow was the wife of a prophet who died and left her a debt she couldn’t pay back. The creditor was coming to take her two sons and make slaves of them. That would leave her completely destitute. A widow with no sons to take care of her was in a really tight spot.

So she went to Elisha the head prophet and asked for help. He didn’t take up a special offering or do a fund-raiser for her. No, he spoke the Word of God into her situation. All she had to do what obey that word. And she did. And because she did, the Great Multiplier–the Lord Almighty touched her only possession–one bottle of oil. As long as she had a vessel to pour into, that oil flowed. It was up to her as to how many vessels to get. Elisha told to get a bunch!

Since the Word says that He is the same yesterday, today and forever, it stands to reason that what He did for this widow, He will do for us. IF we ask Him and do what He tells us to do! I don’t know about you, but in these tough economic times, I need the Great Multiplier to help me out!

How can we apply this to our lives today?

  1. First you have to ask Him for help. A face to face prayer to Him. He may have someone come and pray with you and that’s where you’ll get your instructions.
  2. Second, do what He says to do. Once you know in your heart what He wants you to do, then do it immediately. That’s what the widow did. She went immediately and did everything Elisha told her to do.
  3. Expect Him to do it. Faith isn’t about testing a theory out. It’s trusting that God will do it for you in particular at that moment. The widow fully expected those vessels to be filled with oil because of the word that Elisha spoke to her situation.
  4. Do what He tells you to do AFTER you get the miracle! Elisha said to go and pay her debt off. How many times has the Lord sent money to me to pay a debt and I spent it on something else! See it all the way through to the end.

God has all the provisions we need at His disposal. He is fully ready to multiply our provisions. Provisions we already have, but we have to learn to obey His instructions in handling these provisions. You may be like the widow with only a jar of oil to your name. Take it to the Great Multiplier in FAITH and watch Him multiply it for you. He is faithful if you trust Him.

Blessings everyone…
