“You shall not be afraid of the terror of the night, nor of the arrow (the evil plots and slanders of the wicked) that flies by day. Nor of the pestilence that stalks in darkness, nor of the destruction and sudden death that surprise and lay waste at noonday. A thousand may fall at your side, and ten thousand at your right hand, but it shall not come near you. Only a spectator shall you be [yourself inaccessible in the secret place of the Most High] as you witness the reward of the wicked. Because you have made the Lord your refuge, and the Most High your dwelling place.” (Psalm 91:5-9)
Terrorism is not a new thing. Oddly it is religious wars that spawn terrorism because they justify killing of innocent people as doing “God’s will.” The protestant and catholic wars in Ireland were terrorist wars with car bombings and assassinations. Now it’s Islam with much more violent and gruesome carnage happening all over the world. And it’s rising. Hate has been unleashed into the earth. Hatred of Jews has exploded everywhere. Christians and “western” nations are targets of Islamic terror groups.
But no matter how real and how threatening the terror is, the people of God have a refuge, a dwelling place in the Most High where we are promised to be only spectators. Now more than ever the people of God need to draw ever closer to Him. His promises are real and faithful and true.
