“And when He had stepped into the boat, the man who had been controlled by the unclean spirits kept begging Him that he might be with Him. But Jesus refused to permit him, but said to him, Go home to your own [family and relatives and friends] and bring back word to them of how much the Lord has done for you, and how He has had sympathy for you and had mercy on you. And he departed and began to publicly proclaim in Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him, and all the people were astonished and marveled.” (Mark 5:18-20)
This is the story of the guy who lived in the tombs and was possessed by the Legion of spirits. He was a complete mess! Nobody to could get near him, he was running around naked and cut himself with stones. He was a lunatic. Hopeless and beyond help of any human being. But God…
Jesus was on the other side of the Sea of Galilee when He told His disciples to go to the other side. He knew He was headed to set this man free from those spirits. On the way there, a huge storm blew up and was about to sink the boat! Jesus had to speak to the storm to cease just to be able to get to the other side. Isn’t that just like the devil when he knows he is about to lose big time?
Jesus goes straight to the man and runs the spirits out into a herd of swine. The man was set free from every evil spirit in him. The towns people came and saw the lunatic in his right mind and were scared…so naturally they asked Jesus to leave! The supernatural will either inspire faith or inspire fear in a person.
Now Jesus is preparing to leave the area and the man begs Him to let Him come with Him. When a person is pulled out of a deep, dark pit of misery, they never want to be away from Jesus! The scripture says, Her sins, many as they are are forgiven her, because she has loved much.” (Luke 7:47) When someone gets set free from deep sin, there is an eternal love and devotion that comes with the deepest of gratitude. This was what the man was feeling. He never wanted to be away from Jesus–ever.
But Jesus told him no. He needed him to go back home and testify of the great things the Lord had done to anyone who would listen. And he did and the next time Jesus came to the area they ran to Him and welcomed Him….no longer afraid.
God uses everything in our lives to win the lost to Himself. Every wrong decision, every stupid mistake we have made, God uses it. Who knows but that what you have been delivered from, won’t be used by God to help someone else come out of it too? Don’t beat yourself up for past mistakes…let Him use your entire life to bring glory to His Name and to populate heaven!
