“For to us a Child is born, to us a Son is given; and the government shall be upon His shoulder, and His name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father [of Eternity], Prince of Peace.” (Isaiah 9:6)
Wonderful is the perfect word for Jesus our Counselor. What is a counselor? A counselor is someone who gives expert advice. A counselor is someone who helps you get to the root of a problem in your life. A counselor can also be a lawyer or a government representative. According to this scripture Jesus will be the legal representative in His government after the Great Tribulation is over.
But in the here and now, in our worlds that are full of fears and past hurts, He is the Wonderful Counselor who helps us get free from the past hurts and mistakes. Another word for it is “inner healing.” Inner wounds can devastate a person on so many levels. Helping someone get free is like peeling an onion. It’s layer upon layer and sometimes it is a slow process, but when that person gets free..it is a beautiful thing to behold!
When Jesus counsels there is a transformation that takes place. I have seen it time and time again the complete freedom that only He gave give a person. Everyone says the same thing. They say “I feel lighter!” You can see it in their face and in their eyes.
There are so many people in the world who are bound by hurts of the past. By betrayals, abandonment and rejections. These deep hurts cause toxic emotions to take root deep in the soul. Bitterness, rage, and even hatred get deeply rooted causing all kinds of emotional, mental and physical problems. Even science is starting to realize this. People try to medicate with drugs and alcohol or a host of other things to numb the pain. Some go year after year to a therapist and feel better for a little while, but never fully free from it all. Jesus Christ can do in 30 minutes what a lifetime of therapy can’t do: HEAL from the inside out. Your life can be transformed by the Wonderful Counselor too. Begin to talk to Jesus about the past hurts and He will begin a process of healing that will transform your life.
