“The spirit of a man will sustain him in sickness, but who can bear a broken spirit?” (Proverbs 18:15)
“He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.” (Psalm 147:3)
“The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves such as have a contrite spirit.” (Psalm 34:18)
“He sent His word and healed them, and delivered them from their destruction.” (Psalm 107:20)
“My flesh and my heart fail; but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.” (Psalm 73:26)
There is a pill for every ailment in these days of big Pharma. There are pills that TRY to mend a broken spirit, but fall miserably short. All you get are a bunch of side effects with no real relief. A broken spirit is not mental like depression, although depression can stem from it. It is much deeper than that. It is a totally spiritual problem that only God can fix.
What causes a broken spirit? Relentless trauma. Have you ever seen someone who has had catastrophe after catastrophe in a short period of time? They literally don’t have time to recover from one when the next one hits. The pain of these things can break more than the heart, they break the spirit. The spirit is where God dwells in a person.
I think about the people in Iraq and Syria, namely the women and children in the slave trade over there. The relentless evil they are exposed to, day in and day out, can break a spirit. The degradation they live with that violates their faith, can break a spirit. Satan loves to break down a person’s spirit and he uses evil people to do it.
God is the only one who can mend a broken spirit. He is the spirit healer that we must have to overcome a broken spirit. The problem is that the people are so numb and broken down they don’t have the strength of will to even whisper to God for help. Yet, thankfully, God looks into our hearts and He hears the heart’s cry for help. He can see the heartbeat of hope deep inside us that moves Him to act.
Today, those of us who are strong should lift up those who have broken spirits so that God can begin the healing process. If you are reading this and you know you are broken in spirit, let the spark of hope ignite in you today. As long as you are alive, there is always the hope of a better tomorrow.
