Job’s Prayer of Repentance

“Then Job answered the LORD and said, “I know that You can do everything, and that no purpose of Yours can be withheld from You.  You asked, “Who is this who hides counsel without knowledge?”  Therefore I have uttered what I did not understand, things too wonderful for me, which I did not know.  Listen, please, and let me speak; You said “I will question you, and you shall answer Me.” I have heard of You by the hearing of the ear, but now my eye sees You.  Therefore, I abhor myself, and repent in dust and ashes.”

…Now the LORD blessed the latter days of Job more than his beginning.” (Job 42:1-6, 12)

Job had a really bad season of life.  He’s going along, worshipping God to the best of his ability and unbeknownst to him, Satan had set his heart against Job and went to God’s court to demand to sift Job.  Suddenly in one day Job loses all his children and all his wealth.  But that wasn’t enough for Satan.  He went back to God and wanted permission to touch his body.  Before God had said no to that.  So then, Satan puts these horrible sores all over his body from the top of his head to the very bottom of his feet.  He was totally miserable.  Add to that his own wife tells him to curse God and die.

Through all of this Job stood strong for the LORD.  He praised God anyway.  Then along come his “friends” who then proceed to tear him down with their evil counsel and words.  As time wore on Job became more and more depressed until he wished himself dead and even cursed the day he was born.

Finally, the LORD talked straight to Job and told him of His greatness and might through a series of questions about His creation.  (These chapters have great insight into God’s creation by the way. )  After the LORD finishes His discourse, Job realized he didn’t KNOW God at all!  He just knew about Him.  He had a personal encounter with the Creator and after he repented, God blessed him double what he had before.

People all over the world think they know God, but when the day of desperation comes, they find out that head knowledge does not cut it.  It takes a personal and intimate relationship with Him to give us the staying power in the day of calamity.

Notice Job’s repentance prayer.  He confessed that he only had head knowledge but now he knew Him personally and he repented in humility.  God’s grace was poured out on Job and he was richly blessed.  How was he blessed?  He had ten more children.  He got double the livestock and double the servants he had before.  God gave him double for his trouble!

Are you in a season of calamity?  Don’t give up on God.  Seasons aren’t forever and if you hang on to Him and trust Him, He will bring you through.  He has been faithful to me over and over and over again.

Blessings everyone…
