Prayers of Repentance

In today’s world of “greasy grace,” people are on a slippery slope that leads further and further away from the Lord.  Grace goes hand in hand with repentance.  But what is repentance?  Exactly is involved in repentance?  Let’s see what the Bible says about repentance:

“So REPENT (change your mind and purpose); turn around and return [to God], that your sins may be erased (blotted out, wiped clean), that times of refreshing (of recovering from the effects of heat, of reviving with fresh air) may come from the presence of the Lord; and that He may send [to you] the Christ (the Messiah), Who before was designated and appointed for you–even Jesus.” (Acts 3;19-20)

“If we [freely] admit that we have sinned and confess our sins, He is faithful and just (true to His own nature and promises) and will forgive our sins [dismiss our lawlessness] and continuously cleanse us from all unrighteousness [everything not in conformity to His will in purpose, though an action.  If we say we have not sinned, we contradict His Word and make Him a liar, and His Word is not in us [the divine message of the Gospel] is not in our hearts.” (I John 1:9-10)

Repentance starts with the conviction of the Holy Spirit.  You have this icky feeling in your inner man that feels bad about something you’ve said or done.  For example, you are at a store and the cashier gets an attitude with  you.   You give it right back to him or her when you know the Word says to walk in love to be a light to those who abuse you.  You leave and get that feeling in the pit of your stomach that you have messed up with the Lord.

Go immediately to the Lord and confess that you have sinned by disobeying what you know God expects of you.  Ask Him to forgive you and cleanse you from this sin.  Then repent and make up your mind to walk in love going forward.  That is repentance.  God will immediately put that sin under the Blood of Jesus where it is erased forever and not remembered by God.  The added benefit is that Satan can’t use it against you!  Remember, he is the accuser of the brethren.  It is our unconfessed and unrepented of sins that he is able to use against us.  Repentance is one of the most powerful weapons we have to defeat Satan!

Repentance is a regular thing.  When we say the sinner’s prayer and repent, we are repenting and turning away from our old sinful life and choices we made and embracing God’s way going forward.  Our sins are washed away by His Blood.  The key is to acknowledge those sins and confess them out loud to God.  The old saying “confession is good for the soul” is very true!  Once we enter the kingdom of God, we still live in a fallen world and it takes time for God to clean us up.  So yes, you will mess up..we all mess up occasionally.  Repentance is a beautiful thing!


Here are some prayers of repentance that will help you in this area.  These prayers range from initial salvation to everyday stumbles to repenting from sexual sin.  Sexual sin is serious with God because it is such a huge doorway that Satan can use against you.  Sometimes it’s hard to repent but you have to decide what you want more: the world or God.  If you choose God, you will follow through with repentance because that is where it starts.

SALVATION REPENTANCE PRAYER (THE SINNER’S PRAYER)

FATHER, I COME TO YOU IN THE NAME OF JESUS CHRIST.  I CONFESS THAT I AM A SINNER O LORD.  I HAVE LIVED A SINFUL AND EVIL LIFE.  I ASK YOU TO FORGIVE ME.  I REPENT OF THE SIN IN MY LIFE LORD.  I CHOOSE RIGHT NOW TO TURN AWAY FROM MY OLD LIFE AND FOLLOW YOU INTO A NEW LIFE!  

I ASK YOU LORD JESUS TO COME INTO MY HEART AND SAVE ME FROM MY SINS.  CLEANSE ME FROM ALL EVIL AND UNRIGHTEOUSNESS.  I ASK FOR YOUR BLOOD TO COVER MY SINS AND MAKE ME WHITE AS SNOW.  I RECEIVE YOU INTO MY HEART LORD JESUS TO BE MY LORD–MY SAVIOR AND MY MASTER FROM THIS DAY FORTH AND EVEN FOREVER MORE!

I THANK YOU LORD FOR SAVING ME!  THANK YOU FOR COVERING ALL MY SINS UNDER YOUR BLOOD!  THANK YOU FOR GIVING ME A WHOLE NEW LIFE!  I ASK LORD THAT YOU WOULD HELP ME TO GROW INTO THE MAN/WOMAN OF GOD YOU HAVE CREATED ME TO BE IN JESUS’ NAME I ASK. AMEN AND AMEN!


PRAYER OF RECOMMITMENT (BACKSLIDER’S REPENTANCE PRAYER)

FATHER, I COME TO YOU IN THE NAME OF JESUS CHRIST.  I CONFESS THAT I HAVE FALLEN AWAY FROM YOU.  I CONFESS THAT I HAVE SINNED AGAINST YOU BY BACKSLIDING AWAY FROM YOU AND YOUR WAYS AND YOUR WORD.  LIKE THE PRODIGAL SON O LORD, I HUMBLY ASK FOR YOUR FORGIVENESS FOR THE EVIL I HAVE DONE.  I REPENT AND TURN AWAY FROM THIS EVIL LIFE I HAVE LIVED.  I MISS YOU SO MUCH!

I NOW RECOMMIT MY LIFE TO YOU LORD JESUS.  I WANT TO COME HOME!  I WANT YOU TO BE LORD OF MY LIFE NOW AND FOREVER MORE!  PLEASE FORGIVE ME FOR WANDERING AND WALKING AWAY FROM YOU.  I’M SO SORRY THAT I HAVE HURT YOU.  I ASK THAT MY SINS BE WASHED AWAY BY YOUR PRECIOUS BLOOD.  I THANK YOU FOR THE PRICE YOU PAID SO THAT I CAN BE CLEANSED FROM ALL MY SINS!

FATHER, I COME TO YOU IN THE NAME OF JESUS CHRIST.  I CONFESS THAT I HAVE SINNED SEXUALLY LORD.  I HAVE COMMITTED ADULTERY/FORNICATION WITH ___________________.  I HAVE BETRAYED ________________ (IF MARRIED).  I HAVE BROKEN THE COVENANT OF MARRIAGE WITH _____________________ (IF MARRIED) THAT YOU WERE A WITNESS TO.  I’M SO SORRY LORD FOR FALLING INTO SEXUAL SIN.  I REPENT NOW IN JESUS’ NAME.  I CHOOSE TO WALK AWAY FROM THIS SIN AND FOLLOW YOU INSTEAD.  I CHOOSE TO BE FAITHFUL TO ________________ THE REST OF MY LIFE.  I ASK THAT YOU WOULD HEAL MY MARRIAGE OF THIS SIN.  HEAL __________________ OF THE PAIN OF BETRAYAL THAT THIS HAS CAUSED.

FATHER, I COME TO YOU IN THE NAME OF JESUS CHRIST.  I CONFESS THAT I HAVE SINNED.  I HAVE MESSED UP BY __________(NAME THE SIN INCIDENT)____.  I ACKNOWLEDGE THAT THIS SIN IS AGAINST WHAT YOUR WORD SAYS AND THEREFORE I REPENT OF IT RIGHT NOW IN JESUS’ NAME!  I COME TO YOUR THRONE OF GRACE AND I ASK YOUR FORGIVENESS FOR THIS SIN.  I PUT THIS SIN ON THE ALTAR AND ASK THAT THE BLOOD OF JESUS BE APPLIED TO THIS SIN.  LET IT BE OBLITERATED FOREVER IN JESUS’ NAME!

HELP ME O GOD TO GAIN THE VICTORY IN THIS AREA OF MY LIFE IN JESUS’ NAME.  I ASK THAT YOU WOULD GIVE ME THE UNCTION OF THE HOLY SPIRIT BEFORE I SAY OR DO ANYTHING THAT WOULD OFFEND OR GRIEVE YOU.  I ASK FOR YOUR FORGIVENESS AND I ASK FOR GRACE IN THE NAME OF JESUS.

    Thank you very much for the prayers for our use. I will use one of them for my use personally.
    I am single and 60 of age. I used to be gay for many years. I stopped the evil lifestyle 2 years ago after reading 1st Corinthians 6:9. Unfortunately, I have been haunted by gay thoughts for 2 years now. I, even, avoided watching porns for 2 years! It was not easy. Fortunately, reading three chapters of the Gospels everyday gives me a big strength to stay from that evil lifestyle. Hope this helps

      Hi Dear One,
      I noticed your email hasn’t been responded to just yet. It sounds like you have a heart to please the Lord because if not, these areas of shortfall wouldn’t bother you. I encourage you to confess your sins to JESUS!! Ask Him to remove all of the guilt and shame, and to help you turn completely away from the power of sin. Then, talk to your Pastor and his wife about the areas of sin in your life, it’s what they are there for…to help you overcome in your personal walk with Christ and give you Godly counsel( it should always line up with God’s Word) and with the help of JESUS, you can overcome anything!! Romans 8:1, don’t beat yourself up, and look for people around you who live God’s Word, Godly women to encourage you and Lastly…Honor your Mom. As long as she’s not advising you to sin, you are to obey her..you will be blessed by God for your obedience, even when it’s uncomfortable to you. Love you with the love of JESUS!! Live to please Christ. Grace and peace be with your spirit in JESUS mighty name AMEN!!!

      I read your comment and wanted to share a few thoughts with you. Repentance Is simply turning from sin and Not loving It any longer. You see without the power of Christ In your life you will continually fall back Into those things you hate. You could repent your whole life and confess all your sins every time you fall and still be just as lost when you stand before God. You see Its not about confessing every thing you have ever done, Its about Believing that Jesus did every thing for you already and If you will believe In the work that he did for you at that point you are forgiven. You are Justified before God, a new person. It doesn’t make scene I know but If you believe In Christ for your salvation you will receive the holy spirit into your life and He will Empower you `to live holy. Salvation Is a daily process for the rest of your life. Now through the power of the Holy Spirit you have the power to choose right over wrong. You have the power to choose no respect your mother when Its not easy. You have the power to live for God. But you will never get It through Confession Only through Believing In the Finished work of Jesus.
      Just believe and you will be saved.

        God bless you Tapr5302 for commenting! Yes you are clean and have a fresh start in the eyes of God. Forgiving yourself is very important too. Just keep walking with Jesus. You can’t go wrong when you trust in Him. Even in the darkest valleys–He knows the path out into the light of God.

    Self deliverance?

    Is self deliverance possible? I suffer from anger and rage. I went through a lot of hardship, betrayal, traumatic experiences as an immigrant in a new country. My broken marriage lead me to drinking in my loneliness to relax from sorrow and persecution from ex in-laws.

    I have repented from my sins and self pity and have joined a christian fellowship. They don’t know much about these issues.

    I want to become whole and free. I fought hard to save my daughter and won my rights as a father but dont want my anger issues to become a problem in parenting.

    Please, Micki and fellow believers, if you have any input and advice I would appreciate it!

      Hi Mark ~ Thank you for commenting on the page today! All of my deliverances were done with just me and Jesus in our quiet time. I was delivered from alcoholism, fear and rage, so I know that self-deliverance is possible, but it depends on how close you are to Jesus. Have you met Jesus Christ personally or are you just moving in His direction? Once you have a personal encounter with Him, then you can put everything under His blood.         I was a backslider for 5 years but I never lost hope. Bitterness was deeply rooted in me.

        Im planning to fast for a few days and dedicate my time to the Lord.

    Thank you for this. The only comment I’d make, (if I may), concerning the prayer of the rededication of a backslider, is that the blood of Jesus doesn’t cover our sins – but actually removes our sins completely as far as the east is from the west. (Psalm 103:12). Blessings…

    I’m in my late twenties and when in college, I was a big man. I was cool and bright and energetic.
    Everyone who knew me would seriously think this guy has huge talent.

    But I messed up big bit time. I’m here sitting on the couch, living at home, partially insane, addicted, no hope, etc.

    Can you imagine this situation? It’s very huge.
    From a complete winner to an average Joe.

    I’m becoming insane each day.

    I request that you post a prayer for my situation.

      Hi Zubin ~ There is a Person who can help you out of your situation. His name is Jesus Christ. He loves you very much and wants to give you a life full of good things. We can’t live in the past because that is where regret is. And regret will stifle our future hopes. Say goodbye to the past because you cannot change anything about it. It’s today that matters. Jesus said “take no thought for tomorrow because tomorrow has it’s own troubles.” Today you are in a situation where you need Jesus to come into your life. There’s a line in a song that says “When You walk into the room, everything changes.” And this is so true! It is impossible to be in the presence of Jesus and remain the same. Right where you are, sitting on the couch and living at home in the pit of addiction, ask Jesus to come into your heart. What have you got to lose? He will come.

      Pray this prayer out loud to the Lord: Father God, I come to You in the name of Jesus Christ and I confess that I am a sinner who is lost without Jesus in my heart. Today I choose to repent of my sins and turn away from my current life and turn to You for a new life. Jesus, I ask You to forgive me and come into my heart and be my Lord and Savior. I give my life to You to use as You will. Fill me with Your Spirit and make me a new creature in You. I ask that You restore my right mind and deliver me from all addictions. I know that You have good plans for my life and I accept them now and I thank You for coming into my heart! Amen and Amen!

      Now Zubin, instead of saying “I’m becoming insane each day,” say “I’m alive in Christ and I have a sound mind!” “I am FREE in Jesus’ Name!”

      Your words are powerful and have the ability to bring to pass the things you say. You aren’t insane so don’t “own” it. So what now?       Hi Khaled ~ To answer this, you have to go to the Bible. The Bible is God’s Word for people to live by. It’s the acceptable standard of behavior in His sight. So what does the Bible say about the words that come out of our mouth?

      * Ephesians 4:29 says “Don’t use foul or abusive language. Let everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them.”
      * Matthew 15:18 says “But what comes out of the mouth comes from the heart, and this defiles a man.”
      * Proverbs 18:21 says “The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.”
      * Colossians 4:6 says “Let your conversation be gracious and attractive so that you will have the right response for everyone.”
      * Proverbs 21:23 says “Those who guard their mouths and tongues keep themselves from calamity.”
      * James 3:6 says “The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole body, sets the whole course of one’s life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.”
      * Philippians 4:8 says Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable–if anything is excellent or praiseworthy–think about such things.”
      * Psalm 51:10 says “Create in me a clean heart, O God, And renew a steadfast spirit within me.”

      Whatever comes out of your mouth whether it is words of blessings or curse words, it stems from your heart. As a Christian, or a follower of Jesus, our speech must be full of the love of God. Curse words are used when people are angry most of the time or frustrated. Non-believers of Jesus Christ curse because that is the language of the world. In the Kingdom of God, our speech is loving and seasoned with salt that brings life to people. Is saying curse words a sin? Yes, because they don’t line up with God’s Word. We are not to conform to the world’s ways and cursing is part of the world’s ways. Every once in a while, if I’m really frustrated or angry, I may let it slip out and I have to repent and ask forgiveness because I feel a rift in my relationship with the Lord. Once you have an intimate relationship with Jesus, anything that doesn’t agree with His Word, will cause a rift. I can’t stand being in that position so I rush to the throne of grace and repent. I had a bad problem with profanity when I came to Jesus and it took years to get to the place I am now where I seldom slip in this area, but when I do, I always am quick to repent. I hope this helps.

      Hi Felicia ~ the beauty of repentance is that once the words leave your lips and you mean it in your heart, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit do not remember it anymore. That is how far He removes our sins from us! Receive His love, dust yourself off and keep on walking with Him. He LOVES YOU so passionately if you realized how much your head would spin right off. Just repent by saying “I’m sorry Lord, and I am going to turn from doing that again”. “I accept you Jesus Christ as my God, and my savior and protector”. “I thank you Jesus for listening to me, and being with me, and I know your the most high power, that no other may prosper against you”.     I would like to thank the lord Jesus for this web site and I would like you to know it is exactly what i needed at this moment. I would like you to pray that i continue to live a life of repentance. I pray that anyone who has the same problem with sin who is a believer would find this web site or repent as well.

      So glad you are now in the palm of His hand! Repentance is beautiful. It’s a fresh start. Our Father makes all things new.

      Father, I come into agreement with John right now that Your presence and Spirit will transform him more and more into the very image of Jesus Christ. I praise You that John is even now living above the besetting sins we all face. He is a son in Your kingdom and therefore he is a part of the royal nation! Thank You Father for Jesus Who gives us the blessed privilege of repenting and getting clean from the inside out. Bless John today and every day Lord and let him come up higher and higher in You with each passing day. In Jesus’ name I pray..Amen and Amen.

      God bless you John. I will be praying for you. Draw closer to Him every day and you will be amazed at how your life will change! The closer you are to Him, the less hold sin can have on you. I know, I have overcome such evil ways. Just know He loves you very very much!

  27. Hi, I think your site might be having browser compatibility issues. When I look at your website in Firefox, it looks fine but when opening in Internet Explorer, it has some overlapping. I just wanted to give you a quick heads up! Other then that, very good blog!

      Hi! Thanks for the heads up on the compatibility issue. I’m not surprised Explorer has issues though. I use Chrome for everything. I’ll check into it and see if there are any Wodpress tools that can help with IE. Thanks for visiting!

      What happens if God told you he was with with you and that ypu could return you could repent and believe or listen to voice of deception and at time something was blocking my heart from believing and then heart hardened and now empty inside and concerned I want to return to him and have him back and holy spirit marsha

        Hi Masha ~ As long as you have breath in you lungs and the Age of Grace is in effect, which it is, you can repent and turn to the Lord. Deception will tell you He doesn’t want you. It’s a lie. The fact that you have taken the time to seek someone’s help shows that you want Him. Here is a prayer of repentance I encourage you to speak out loud to God the Father and mean it in your heart.

        Father, I come to Your throne of grace in the name of Jesus Christ, Your Son, my Savior. I thank You for sending Jesus to die for me and to purchase my salvation. I know it is already paid for and I am here now to redeem it. I want to follow You with my whole heart. Such as I am, I now give to You. I don’t care how I feel, whether my heart is soft or hard. I choose YOU today. I choose to follow Jesus and take up my cross. I ask You to forgive all my sin and cleanse me with the precious blood of Jesus. Make the pages of my book red and wash away the sin forever. I place everything on the altar Jesus and ask You to create in me a clean heart and renew a right spirit within me. I invite you to live in my heart forever. I ask for a fresh infilling of the Holy Spirit to empower me to live for You daily. I thank You for loving me and saving me! I love You because You first loved me. In all these things I ask in Jesus’ name. Amen and AMen!

        After your pray this prayer, don’t look at how your feel. It’s a journey of faith. Just know that Jesus will come into your heart when you ask Him to. Your sins will be gone and a whole new life awaits you. God bless you Marsha…
